Again

rings reflected in water

‘Tis a lesson you should heed,

Try, try again;

If at first you don’t succeed,

Try, try again.

Then your courage should appear,

For, if you will persevere,

You will conquer, never fear;

Try, try again.

It’s a poem I made my kids memorize when they were nothing more than babies.  Now they use it on me whenever they see me frustrated, failing.

Try, try again they tell me.

Again is the story of my life.  I do it every single day in the big things and the little.

Laundry, dishes, sweeping – those are again and again.

But my life and yours, they are made up of more than ordinary tasks.  They are also the big things – the marriage, the parenting, the squeaking out a living in tough world, the chasing your dream.  These are also agains, because they take constant striving, work.

And then there’s God, the One full of grace, who offers us forgiveness and love and freedom.  He pours these gifts over us again and again, nothing withholding.  He doesn’t begrudge us the chance to try, try again.

Somewhere deep inside I think again may be our lives.

    This writing was a beautiful testament to the tenacity you were given. Keep on trying and I’ll be trying right alongside with you. Again and again!

    sweet sister I love this!

    I look at my “agains” as downers most days.. not even going to lie. This post, however, has me eager to take them on with a different heart. Especially the daily tasks. I forget all too easily how many people are hungry again, sick again, losing again..

    thank you for this xoxo

      Kristin, I totally understand. Sometimes the “agains” drive me absolutely insane. Some days I don’t think I can handle doing anything again. That’s when I need a reality check and great big dose of perspective.

      Prayers for you.

    I like how you linked the children’s poem with the lessons of life and God’s again “ness” in our lives. I think it’s true again is what it means to be…I love the prefix ” re-…so many verbs can me remade with it and give us forward motion…remake, renew, repent, restore, rejuvenate, etc…

    Love this. I hope you don’t mind if I hijack your excellent parenting and have my son memorize this poem! What a great idea! My son tends to want to quit if he isn’t immediately an expert at something. Hmmmm…..I wonder where he could have gotten that from?!?! (Ok, I know).

    Have a blessed weekend!
